IIT JEE (Main & Advanced) 2026 Exam Details

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is one of the most prestigious national-level engineering entrance examinations in India conducted for admission into top engineering institutions such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs).

The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the JEE Main examination, while JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs on a rotational basis.

The JEE examination is conducted in two stages:

  • JEE Main – Qualifying examination for admission into NITs, IIITs, and eligibility for JEE Advanced.
  • JEE Advanced – Entrance examination for admission into IITs.

JEE Main 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria prescribed by NTA are eligible to apply for JEE Main 2026.

Age Limit

  • There is no age limit for candidates appearing for the JEE Main examination.
  • However, candidates must satisfy the age criteria of the institute to which they are seeking admission.

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates who passed Class 12 or equivalent examination in 2024, 2025, or appearing in 2026 are eligible.
  • Candidates must have studied at least five subjects in the qualifying examination.

Mandatory Subjects

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics

Minimum Qualifying Marks

  • General category candidates generally require a minimum of 75% aggregate marks for admission into IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.
  • Reserved category candidates generally require a minimum of 65% aggregate marks.

JEE Main Reservation Criteria

The reservation policy followed by NTA is based on Government of India reservation guidelines.

  • OBC-NCL ——– 27%
  • Scheduled Castes (SC) ——– 15%
  • Scheduled Tribes (ST) ——– 7.5%
  • Persons with Disabilities (PwD) ——– 5%
  • EWS Category ——– 10%

JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates seeking admission into IITs must qualify for JEE Advanced 2026 after clearing JEE Main.

Important Eligibility Conditions

  • Candidates must qualify in JEE Main 2026 and secure a position among the top candidates shortlisted for JEE Advanced.
  • Candidates should have appeared for Class 12 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • Candidates can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
  • Candidates who have already accepted admission into an IIT are generally not eligible to appear again.

JEE Advanced Age Limit

  • General category candidates should satisfy the age criteria specified in the official JEE Advanced notification.
  • A relaxation in age limit is provided for SC/ST/PwD candidates as per government norms.
